Minister for Home from 24-5-1982 to 24-5-1986. 

Chairman, Committee on Public Accounts (1987-89). 

Member, Lok Sabha  (1971-77) & (1977-79), Rajya Sabha  (1994–2000) and since 2003. 

Member, Indian Delegation to United Nations in 1986, 1988 and 2004, Congress Working Committee; Founder General Secretary, K.S.U.; General Secretary, Indian Youth Congress, AICC; Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD.
