Started political life while a student; actively participated in students' struggle for "Goa Liberation" in 1953; served as Secretary, Peravoor Village Congress Committee in 1955; Vice President, Dharmadam Mandalam Congress Committee in 1956; President, Kannur District KSU in 1957; Member, KSU State Committee in 1958; President, Kozhikode District KSU from 1960 to 1963; Convenor, District Youth Congress Committee, Kozhikode during 1963-64; State Secretary of KSU and Youth Congress from 1966 to 1969; Was KPCC Member (1964); Block Congress Secretary (1960-61); Secretary DCC, Malappuram (1969-70) and DCC, Kozhikode (1971-73); DCC President, Kozhikode from 1973 to 1978; KPCC Secretary from 1978 to 1980; Member, Congress (S) Central working Committee in 1981, Treasurer, AICC(S) from 1993 to 1999 ; Leader of Congress (S) Legislature Party from 1981 to 1999; jailed three times; Participated in various struggles; Worked as President and Secretary of various Trade Unions; Worked as Member, Kerala State INTUC Executive (1974-76); worked as journalist in "Mathrubhumi" and as Editor of "Dharmachakram", "Yuvatha" and Nireeksham" weeklies; Chairman, Malabar Region KANFED; Member, Kerala Grandhasala Sanghom Control Board; Member, Kozhikode Regional Transport Authority; Chairman, C.K.G. Symposium Permanent Committee. Was Minister for Community development, Public Health Engineering, Employment Training and Sports during 1980-81 and Minister for Health from 1987 to 1991 and Minister for Health and Sports from 1996 to 2000.
